Police in Hamilton are praising the actions of two people who prevented a man from drowning after he fell from a city bridge into the Waikato River on Tuesday.

The man, 55, was dragged from the river by a man and a woman who had seen him fall at 5pm. They were able to assist him before emergency services arrived.

Police say they are looking into the most appropriate way of recognising their efforts.
