The centre of the country was rocked by an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale on Saturday evening.

GNS Science says the quake struck at 6.02pm and was centred at sea, 20km north west of Wellingon.

The quake had a focal depth of 40km.

Seismologist John Ristau from GNS Science says the earthquake would not have been strong enough to cause any damage.
