Better air checks wanted in SH1 tunnels in city

The Mount Victoria Residents Association is calling on the Transport Agency to improve the methods used for monitoring air quality in tunnels on State Highway 1 in the city.

The Green Party has revealed the agency's monitoring of the Mount Victoria and Terrace Tunnels does not measure for particles 2.5 micrometres and under.

In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency says particles that size contain microscopic solids, or liquid droplets, so small they can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems.

The Mount Victoria Residents Association says knowing fine particles are not measured casts doubt on a recent report declaring the air in the tunnels is safe.
