Tainui Maori have begun celebrations for the biggest event in their calendar year.
Waatea news reports the third Koroneihana for Kingi Tuheitia commenced on Sunday, celebrated by indoor bowls and golf tournaments.
Former chairman of the coronation organising committee Tom Roa says it is also a time for remembrance and paying respects to those who have passed away.
The celebrations will conclude on 23 August.
