Patea meatworks set for demolition

5:40 am on 7 August 2009

Contractors will soon begin work to clear the former Patea Freezing Works site, after fire destroyed the buildings earlier this year.

The abandoned works burned down on Waitangi Day, leaving a pile of ash contaminated with asbestos.

South Taranaki District Council has hired Nikau Contractors to demolish the buildings and clear the site, including removing all asbestos.

Council group manager of environment and information services Graham Young says it is hoped work will begin within the next four weeks.

He says the council will monitor air and water discharges from the site while the work is underway.
