Officers and crew of the Navy's latest inshore patrol vessel, were treated to a special charter parade in Napier on Saturday.

HMNZS Rotoiti has adopted Napier as its home port and is there until Tuesday following its maiden voyage from the Devonport naval base.

Mayor Barbara Arnott says the Navy's special relationship with Napier goes back to 1931 when two cruisers were sent to provide assistance following the Hawke's Bay earthquake.

The vessel will play a significant role in patrolling New Zealand's 15,000km of coastline and the exclusive economic zone.
