Several crashes on icy roads in South Island

5:12 pm on 2 July 2009

There were several ice-related crashes in rural parts of the South Island on Thursday morning.

In the worst incident, rural fire brigades had to cut two people out of two vehicles, on the Main North Road between the Waimakariri River and Kaiapoi north of Christchurch.

The occupants were taken to Christchurch hospital with minor and moderate injuries.

Police urge motorists to be aware of ice on the road, especially in the lower South Island.
