Police are investigating after a new-born baby girl in Hamilton was left with critical injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders said the 3-week-old baby suffered injuries in Hamilton earlier this week and is now in a critical condition in Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital.
Saunders said the baby's injuries are being treated as "unexplained" while police and Oranga Tamariki worked to establish the cause.
A scene examination has been completed at the Hamilton property where the baby and her parents live.
"The investigation is ongoing and further updates will be provided when available," said Saunders.
