Residents return home after Christchurch fire brought under control

People have returned to their homes after a blaze near Cass Bay in Christchurch, which has now been brought under control.

Up to 20 properties were evacuated this afternoon. Three helicopters and four ground crews were still fighting the fire this evening.

Crews were first called at 1.30pm and Fire and Emergency said they would remain at the scene overnight.

Staff would re-assessing the situation in the morning.

The fire, which had been burning just off Governors Bay Road, was fanned by high winds this afternoon.

It was one of four fires in Canterbury. A tussock fire was also tended to at Marine Parade in New Brighton; trees were on fire in a paddock in Loburn and a median strip was on fire near the Christchurch airport in Harewood.

The spokesperson said some of the incidents were due to windy conditions.
