The Auckland housing market is showing further signs of stability with real estate agent Barfoot and Thompson recording its best month in more than two years.

The company, which sells about one in three Auckland houses, says the average sale price increased more than 6% in May to just under $554,000.

It sold 814 houses during the month, which is a 1% increase on the number of sales in May last year.

Barfoot and Thompson managing director Peter Thompson expects it will take two to three years for the market to recover.
