A police patrol car was briefly stolen and damaged at Waihi Beach in western Bay of Plenty.
Police say an officer working alone from nearby Waihi was called to a disturbance on the beach at about 10.30pm on Sunday.
The vehicle was stolen while an arrest was being made.
It was driven about 75 metres before crashing into a fence.
Both the car and the fence were damaged.
