Wellington police are investigating an attack on a 19-year-old man which left him with severe facial wounds.
Police say the man had been at a Courtney Place nightclub but left by himself in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police say he was set upon by a group of men nearby in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack.
The man was chased, punched and kicked to the ground and during the attack was stabbed in the face with what police believe was a broken bottle.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack.
