A Manukau City Council working party has recommended that street prostitution be outlawed by an amendment to the Prostitution Reform Act.
The group's chairperson, Dick Quax, says the recommendation arises out of concern about the increasingly aggressive stance of prostitutes, who it says have been prevalent in South Auckland since the act was passed in 2003.
The council's previous bid to recriminalise street prostitution in the Manukau District was rejected by the Government in 2006.
Mr Quax says the working party has also recommended local authorities be given the power to make bylaws regulating where, other than brothels, prostitution may take place.
He says the recommendation will be put to the council's policy and activities committee in two weeks' time.
