APN targets Wanganui sub-editing jobs

Journalists at the Wanganui Chronicle are facing job losses following a proposal by owners APN to move the newspaper's sub-editing services to Auckland.

Wayne Ruscoe, of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union, says the latest proposal comes a year after the company cut the number of sub-editors at the paper from eight to four.

Mr Ruscoe says sub-editing is an important role because it guarantees the accuracy of the news and the impact of any change will be felt on the community.

He says it is ironic the suggestion of possible job losses was made a day before the company published a good news edition of the newspaper.

Mr Ruscoe says the union has a fortnight to comment on the proposal, but is not optimistic.
