Emergency flares a false alarm, say police

10:41 am on 14 March 2009

Napier police say they believe emergency flares seen in the early hours of Saturday morning were set off by revellers rather than people in distress.

Police and search and rescue workers spent two hours scouring the Napier coastline after a number of people reported seeing emergency flares set off near Marine Parade just before 2am.

A helicopter was used to search from the air, but found no signs of anyone in distress.
