A woman, 37, is in Dunedin Hospital with serious head injuries after being found unconscious at a house in rural Alexandra on Sunday.
Police say two children found with her are now being cared for by next of kin.
They say a man found wandering near the house has been taken to Dunedin for psychiatric and medical examinations.
Forensic staff are examining the scene.
