Trapped tramper rescued by chopper

A man has been rescued from a precarious position on a Fiordland bluff, after a signal from his personal emergency locator beacon was traced by rescuers.

Scott Pauley says he fell after losing sight of the walking track and of his friend, who was helping him navigate the alpine route.

He was trying to negotiate a steep unmarked ridge when he fell into an area where he couldn't move either up or down.

The National Rescue Coordination Centre says a signal from the beacon was detected at about 11am on Saturday.

A helicopter found Mr Pauley, who was stuck on a steep drop above Lake Roe, unable to move either up or down.

He was picked up, winched on board, and flown to Te Anau. He suffered only minor injuries.
