Police in Wellington are hoping forensic scientists can shed some light on the person responsible for a hit-and-run in a tunnel that left a man critically injured.
Earl Krayskopf, 41, was walking through the Hataitai bus tunnel early on Saturday when he was struck from behind and thrown about 20 metres.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says scientists at the Institute of Environmental Science and Research will examine fragments of paint on Mr Krayskopf's clothes.
He says there is enough paint for scientists to get a match and vehicle manufacturers will then be approached to help with identification.
Mr Thornton says the vehicle is likely to have damage to its front and left side.
He is appealing for people to come forward with any information, including drivers who use the bus tunnel regularly.
