Police tried to stop the vehicle the man was driving at about 10am but he fled and then abandoned the car.

The 39-year-old then ran through a number of properties in Weymouth before climbing onto the roof of a house and refusing to come down.

Both the responding officers and the police negotiation team were unable to encourage the man to climb down from the roof.

Police said the man then started to damage the property so they were forced to use tactical options to take the man into custody.

The home owners remained inside while the man was on the roof.

He will appear at the Manukau District Court on Monday facing driving, assault, wilful damage and threatening behaviour charges.
