Bottom of South Island rocked by magnitude 5.8 earthquake

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake has rattled parts of the South Island.

The quake was 12km deep and was centred in the Puysegur area, in the south-west, GNS duty seismologist Jonathan Hanson said.

It was also felt in Invercargill and Stewart Island, he said.

The earthquake, shortly before 1pm, has not triggered a tsunami warning.
