A bar in Dunedin's Stuart Street has been cordoned off by police after an unexplained death.
Police said they were alerted shortly before 4am this morning.
Emergency services attended but the man died at the scene.
The owner of the Carousel Bar, John Devereux, has told RNZ the man appears to have fallen down the stairwell.
The nightclub has a one-way door policy from 3am, with no-one allowed to enter after that.
