A Canterbury man has been charged in relation to a fire started by fireworks shot out of a moving car in Rolleston.
About 7pm on Saturday night, a witness reported seeing two vehicles that appeared to be in a chase and shooting fireworks at each other out the windows.
A fire broke out in a hedge causing significant damage to several hedges and a garden, as well as destroying a ride-on mower.
A nearby house was at risk and the occupants had to be evacuated overnight.
Police say a man came forward after publicity about the fire, and he has been charged with intentional damage.
He will appear in the Christchurch District Court next Tuesday.
