Last attempt to split Rodney from Auckland fails

6:39 pm on 22 July 2010

Legislation that would have allowed Rodney District Council to split from the new Auckland super-city has been defeated in Parliament.

Labour MP Darien Fenton promoted a local bill under which Rodney District Council would have survived.

She says she introduced it because the whole super-city saga has been mismanaged and people from Rodney have made it clear they do not want to be part of the new Auckland Council.

National and ACT voted against the bill so it was defeated at its first reading.

Ms Fenton says it should have at least been allowed to go to select committee, so there could have been a public debate.

The new Auckland council comes into being on 1 November. It will replace eight existing councils.
