Christchurch man escapes unscathed in home explosion

2:52 pm on 10 September 2018

A Christchurch man has escaped with just minor injuries after an explosion at his Opawa home this morning.

Emergency services were called to Hawford Road about 10.30am.

The fire was extinguished at the inner city suburb house.

Senior sergeant Craig Johnson said the explosion was strong enough to break windows in the house.

The man received cuts to his hands and fingers and singed hair, Mr Johnson said.

Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand investigators are working together to find out what caused the explosion.

They believe a portable gas cooker may have been involved in the explosion.

The extent of the damage to the property is unknown.
