Flooding from heavy rain has closed the major coastal route around the East Cape in three places.
The NZ Transport Authority said State Highway 35 is closed at Ruatoria due to flooding and also between Torere and Te Kaha because of a slip at Hawai.
Another slip 15 kilometres east of Te Kaha has closed the road between Opotiki and Te Araroa.
A detour is in place via State High 35 onto State Highway 2 between Opotiki and Gisborne and back onto 35.
