The property, a white weatherboard 1950s-style house, was cordoned-off after the incident.

Stokes Valley resident Roxanne Caldow told RNZ she was on her way to pick up her daughter from school when she heard a gunshot.

"I was walking down George Street and I heard a gunshot - a bang that sounded like a gunshot. And then I saw a young boy and a young-ish mum and he was calling for his mum to come out of the house after the gunshot that went out."

Hutt Valley police inspector Scott Cooper said yesterday police were checking at Lower Hutt addresses to locate the gunman.

Police said the man alleged to have fired the gun was known to the victim, and was not considered to be a risk to the wider public.
