Two women have been arrested in Christchurch over the burglaries of homes rented through popular accommodation websites.

The women, aged 30 and 35, were due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on a range of charges today.

Police last week warned anyone renting out their homes online to take extra security precautions after a number of burglaries were linked to bookings through popular accommodation websites.

They said the properties were booked using stolen credit card details.

Police said in order to ensure bookings were legitimate, they recommended asking for photo identification, and having renters pick up the keys from an agent or trusted person.

In addition, the processing of a credit card transaction did not mean it was legitimate because transactions still go through with illegally obtained details, police said.

Inquiries were ongoing as police believed more people may have been involved.
