More heavy rain and wind expected today

About 100 properties are without power in Auckland following the heavy rain and wind yesterday.

Strong gusts of winds up to 120km per hour and heavy downpours of rain hit the region yesterday, downing trees and powerlines.

About 2000 properties lost power.

Auckland lines company Vector is working to restore power to the remaining properties.

More heavy rain and wind is expected today in Coromandel and Bay of Plenty.

The region was hit hard yesterday with rain between 120 and 150mm falling.

A heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of south Canterbury today, and for Nelson and Marlborough.

In Canterbury a number of roads are closed due to flooding after heavy rain and wind yesterday and last night.

Parts of State Highway One from Timaru to the Waimate Junction near Makikihi road is closed due to flooding, as is an area near the intersection of Marshall road also on SH1.

Motorists are advised to take extra care when driving along State Highway Eight from Fairlie to Omarama, where snow and ice is expected.

Between two and five cm of snow is expected along the Lindis Pass and Crown Range road.
