Auckland's mayor Phil Goff is recovering in hospital after unplanned cardiac surgery.
A spokesperson said the mayor had undergone angioplasty yesterday, and was not expected back at work for a week.
Mr Goff is expected to remain in Auckland Hospital for a couple more days.
He returned late last week from a short business trip to Hong Kong.
He is the second mayor of Auckland to have heart trouble. His predecessor Len Brown had several months off work after a heart attack at a public function 10 years ago, while in his previous role as mayor of Manukau.
