A Dunedin taxi driver has been injured after being assaulted and robbed, allegedly by a female passenger.

Police say the attack happened about 11.20pm on Saturday.

The driver had taken a man and a woman to South Dunedin from the city, they say, and after the man left the taxi the woman punched the driver at least twice before taking his money.

The woman, believed to be in her late teens or early twenties, is described as Maori, with dark hair tied in a ponytail.

The driver is in Dunedin hospital with facial injuries.
