A magnitude 5.1 earthquake has rattled parts of the lower North Island.

The quake struck at 3.30 this afternoon and was centred 65 kilometres north of the French Pass at a depth of 124 kilometres.
GeoNet described the intensity of the shaking as light.
It recorded more than 4700 'felt' reports.
