Three teenagers have been charged with the murder of an elderly man in Hamilton.

The body of Wellington man Donald Alfred Stewart, 74, was found in a central city street in the early hours of Sunday, 27 June. Police say he died from a blow to the head.

Two days after his body was found, Mr Stewart's car was discovered crushed at an Auckland scrapyard.

Police say information from the public has been a great help in the investigation, particularly after they asked for sightings of the car.

They say they'd still like to hear from a "good samaritan" who helped a group of people the day Mr Stewart's body was found.

Those arrested, aged 14, 15 and 17, appeared in the Youth Court in Hamilton on Friday and were remanded in custody until another court appearance next Wednesday.
