Motorists are being urged to be patient on the roads today as holiday traffic builds.
In Wellington, holiday traffic congestion is already backing up on State Highway 1 through the Kāpiti Coast.

NZTA said the traffic was expected to be heaviest around 12pm to 1pm.
Meanwhile, in Auckland, traffic on State Highway 2 near Maramarua was also expected to be heavy around the same period.
In the Bay of Plenty, State Highway 2 between Tauranga and Katikati will be heaviest this afternoon, and in the South Island, holiday traffic is expected on State Highway 6 near Queenstown throughout much of the afternoon.
NZTA said people should be extra patient and expect delays, and they can find more information about holiday traffic on their website.
