Suspicious house fire in Greymouth

Investigators will today be inspecting a house fire that happened overnight in Camerons, south of Greymouth.

Three local brigades were called to the fire which was brought under control just before 3am.

There were no reports of injuries but the fire service is treating it as suspicious.

In a separate incident, firefighters have managed to extinguish a forest fire that broke out in the Maitai Valley near Nelson overnight.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze just after 9.30pm, with the fire spreading rapidly due to high winds.

Fire forestry crews are still at the scene checking for hot spots.

A spokesman said it was suspected the blaze was caused by fireworks.
