Lincoln University has revoked the honorary doctorate it gave to former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori in 1998.
Last year Fujimori was jailed for 25 years for his role in the deaths and abductions of guerrilla fighters while he led Peru in the 1990s.
At the time he was already in prison for human rights violations.
The university council has now voted to remove the honorary Doctor of Science awarded to Fujimori in 1998 for his contribution to agriculture and science as an academic, and for his achievements as head of state up to 1998.
Vice-chancellor Roger Field says he believes it is the right decision because the offences Fujimori committed are contrary to the values of the university.
