Holiday traffic is easing although some roads are expected to remain busy this evening, as the long weekend draws to a close.
The New Zealand Transport Agency says southbound traffic is busy on State Highway 1 north and south of Auckland.
There were also long tailbacks on State Highway 25 on the Coromandel peninsula. Police said the traffic "backed up many kilometres from the coast to Thames".
Earlier, a truck crashed near the Firth of Thames. No-one was injured but the road was closed until the truck was removed.
Traffic at Otaki on the Kapiti Coast has started to ease, the agency said. SH1 southbound to Wellington remains busy.
Numerous other hotspots around the main centres and popular routes were expected to be busy until the evening on Monday.
Outside of the main centres, traffic has eased, but remains busy around Christchurch.
