Former Navy serviceman denied compensation

A former Navy steward has lost his bid for compensation from the Crown for sexual assaults he says occurred when he was serving on the HMNZS Canterbury in the 1980s.

The man, whose name is suppressed, was seeking $200,000 for mental injury, along with exemplary damages.

The man said another crew member sexually assaulted him and was removed from the ship two months later after further information came to light about his sexual activities.

In the judgment, Justice Mallon found that most of the man's claims are barred by ACC legislation.

She also ruled against granting exemplary damages.
