The country's only private Muslim school for girls has passed one of the main hurdles to joining New Zealand's state school system.
The Government said earlier this year that an application from Zayed College for Girls in Auckland was among five under consideration.
The college, in Mangere, has about 80 students.
Documents released under the Official Information Act show the college passed the first hurdle in its application to become a state integrated school last year.
The documents say the school's main reason for seeking integration is financial, and it expected to close at the end of last year if it was unsuccessful. But they also say the school might not be financially viable, even if it does integrate.
If Zayed College is successful it will become the first new integrated school since a new Catholic school opened in Auckland at the start of this year.
There is one other Muslim school in New Zealand, but Zayed College is the only Muslim girls' school.
