Police have appealed for witnesses to a crash north of Dunedin which has left a teenager in hospital.

A 16-year-old girl from East Otago High School was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with a back injury and a seven-year-old boy was treated at the scene for a minor head injury. He was taken by ambulance to hospital for observation.

The crash on the corner of State Highway 1 and Goodwood Rd happened about 3.30pm.

East Otago High School principal Lennox Sharp said the girl's back and neck were injured when the truck clipped the back of the bus, which was carrying about 10 students from his school and Palmerston Primary.

He said the seven-year-old boy was taken hospital after complaining of feeling sick.

Bus company Ritchies said it was investigating.
