The police in Auckland are keen to find the owners of war medals recovered during an investigation into breaches of the Secondhand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act.

Police say the Auckland-based Operation Castle resulted in dozens of arrests and the recovery of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen jewellery, as well as the medals.

The medals were awarded from several wars, including the Third Anglo-Afghan War and the First and Second World Wars.

They are among 443 items from Operation Castle that can be viewed on the New Zealand police website.
