Troubled school shows improvements - ERO

A turnaround in performance has been reported by the Education Review Office at a school where some teachers hit, swore at and denigrated students.

The Government dismissed the board of trustees at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate in Otara last year.

The ERO says it's identified solid progress and concerted efforts have been made to improve safety.

Literacy and numeracy levels are below national expectations, but show continued improvement.

The board was replaced by a commissioner who says parents should be assured that students are getting a sound education and a replacement board should be in place next year.
