The Defence Force is selling surplus property to boost its frontline military capability.
One in five houses at camps and bases is currently vacant, with most personnel choosing to live in the community. Defence has 2480 houses, of which 581 are empty.
The Defence Force chief, Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae, says the sale reflects changing needs.
He says 174 houses for removal at Burnham, Linton and Waiouru are expected to sell for $50 million, which will be used to improve the military's capabilities.
Landlord interest tipped
Landlords say there will be a demand for army houses, from buyers who already own large sections.
The Property Investors Federation says landlords wanting a second dwelling on an existing section could relocate and renovate a former army house.
It says that would cost less than building from scratch.
Federation president Martin Evans says the buyers are likely to be experienced property investors who know about navigating council by-laws.
