Huntly Maori have signed a memorandum of understanding with Huntly power station owner Genesis Energy aimed at improving what's been a fractious relationship.
Kaumatua Taitimu Maipi, representing the five marae in the Huntly area, says the difficulties date back to the building of the station in 1973.
Under the agreement signed on Friday the parties will work together on resource planning, educational scholarships, cultural activities, employment and marae development.
Mr Maipi told Waatea News there are lessons for other companies going into communities about having a strong relationship with Maori.
He says companies should look after the environment they're living in, understand the culture and tikanga of the community and work on a relationship.
Mr Maipi says he believes Genesis now better understands the community's concerns.
