Five people have been taken to hospital, one with serious injuries, after a crash near Christchurch.
The accident happened on the Ashley River Bridge on State Highway One. The police have closed the bridge while fire and ambulance officers attend the site.
Southbound traffic is being diverted up Wyllies Road to Ashley while northbound traffic is being diverted along Gressons Road to Rangiora.
