An elderly pedestrian has been taken to hospital after becoming caught up in a police pursuit.

Police say they were chasing a wanted person in the North Shore suburb of Milford at 9.15am on Tuesday before the man's vehicle turned and officers lost sight of him.

An 80-year-old woman at a pedestrian crossing had her hand brushed by the man's car and fell over.

She was taken to North Shore Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police say the pursuit was over a distance of about 350 metres. They say they know the driver's identity and are appealing for the man to give himself up.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been advised and the Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident.
