New Zealand Warriors captain Steve Price says the team is doing all it can to support the family of Sonny Fai, who is missing, presumed drowned.

Fai, 20, got into trouble in the surf at Bethells Beach about 8pm on Sunday after saving his younger brother, who was caught in a rip.

Price paid tribute to Fai at Mt Smart Stadium on Tuesday, saying he still has hope the player will be found alive.

The Warriors earlier held a training session, which Fai was previously scheduled to attend. An emotional Price told reporters he is not coping well.

Fai played 15 games for the Warriors after making his NRL debut last March. He was voted the Warriors' under-20 player of the year in 2007.
