Roll closures 'will have long-term effects'

The decision by Victoria and Otago universities to close this year's enrolments for undergraduate students will have long-term consequences for Maori, says the Maori Students Association.

Jacqueline Poutu says that when enrolments reopen for next year, it is likely there will be an increased emphasis on academic achievement in filling the limited places.

Waatea News reports this means many Maori school-leavers are starting on the back foot because they come from low-decile schools.
