Law Society wants victim statements in Youth Court

The Law Society wants victim impact statements introduced to the Youth Court.

It has made the suggestion in a submission to a victim's rights review by the Government.

At the moment, victims are given an opportunity to speak within the Youth Court's confidential family group conferences.

But the Law Society says a victim's perspectives could be better communicated back to the court itself.

Principal Youth Court Judge Andrew Becroft says conferences involve victims far better than victim impact statements do.

But he says the statements should be formalised within the Victims Rights Act, as an alternative.
