Pair wanted after assault on Whangarei driver

Police in Whangarei are searching for two men who attacked a driver they'd asked for a ride home.

The 29-year-old man was parked outside the shops on Kamo Road in Whangarei about 6.30pm, when the pair, in their twenties, asked him for a lift.

Police said once in the car they punched the driver and put him in a choke-hold before giving him directions to drive them around the Avenues area of Whangarei.

The victim drove along Central Avenue but flashed his lights and sounded his horn to get another driver's attention on Second Avenue before stopping.

The assailants then ran away.

Police want to hear from the driver of the ute that stopped on Second Avenue, and anyone who may have been in the are of Central Avenue or Water Street who may have seen the two males fleeing.
