Two homes burn overnight

Five people required medical treatment, including one with moderate injuries, after a Bay of Plenty house fire overnight.

The Fire Service was called to a bungalow on Huia Crescent in Bay of Plenty town Te Teko before 3.30am.

The house was engulfed in flames when the crews arrived.

One person was still in Whakatane Hospital with moderate injuries this morning, while four others had been treated for smoke inhalation.

A specialist fire investigator was sent to the scene.

Meanwhile, the Fire Service was also investigating a fire at a house in Auckland suburb New Windsor this morning.

Crews were called to the fire at the two-storey property on Laburnum Road at 5.30am.

The fire started in the basement, and no one was injured.
